Myth: Cops Can't Lie To You.

One of the biggest legal myths out there is that police officers are required to be truthful when they're questioning a suspect.

They're not.

Police can tell you they found your fingerprints when they didn't.

They can tell you your friend already confessed when he hasn't.

They can tell you they have surveillance video when no such video exists.

The goal is often to get you talking, and the law generally allows these types of investigative tactics.

Now, there are limits. Police can't physically force a confession, and there are circumstances where deception can become so extreme that it creates legal issues.

But the idea that officers must be honest with you during an interrogation is simply not true.
